Justin Trudeau has issued statements of support for CEE issues and supports a strong position against Vladimir Putin’s aggression in the region. The Liberal leader made some worrying jokes and remarks about Ukraine and NATO in 2014.
The Liberal platform includes maintaining support for Ukraine and endorsing Ukrainian membership in NATO and the EU. Mr. Trudeau’s Liberals have also proposed that Russia be removed from the international SWIFT banking system.
Liberal MP Irwin Cotler has introduced private members legislation for Canada to adopt Magnitsky legislation, which would target Russian human rights abusers with visa freezes and sanction freezes. The Liberal Party has committed to adopting this legislation and also support adding close Putin advisors, Igor Sechin and Vladimir Yakunin to Canada’s existing list of sanctioned entities and individuals.
Individual candidates, such as Borys Wrzesnewskyj, have advocated for much stronger Liberal positions on CEE issues including the delivery of lethal aid to Ukraine.
